Amar Muchhala made his debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in 2013, singing Chulak in David Bruce’s The Firework-Maker’s Daughter and also covered the lead role of Essex in Richard Jones’s production of Britten’s Gloriana. In 2014/15 he starred as Alex in the world premiere of Søren Nils Eichberg’s Glare at the ROH and went on to cover the role of Pasterz in the 2015 production of Szymanowski’s Krol Roger, directed by Kasper Holten and conducted by Antonio Pappano. More recently, Amar worked closely with director Graham Vick in the world premiere production of Haas’s Morgen und Abend, covering the lead role of Peter.
Amar's past operatic engagements include Mo in Edward Rushton’s Babur in London (The Opera Group), Ferrando in Mozart’s Così fan tutte (Hamburg University of Music and Theatre), Georg in Boieldieu's Die weisse Dame (Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg), Tamino in Mozart’s The Magic Flute (British Youth Opera), Zweite Engel in the world premiere of Giorgio Battistelli’s LOT (Staatsoper Hannover), and Camille Desmoulins in Gottfried von Einem’s Dantons Tod (Theater Magdeburg).
Resident in London, Muchhala was born in Bombay and studied Business Management and French literature at Franklin and Marshall College, Pennsylvania, before gaining a place on the opera course at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Having naturally transitioned to lyric repertoire, he remains focused on a variety of lyric roles from the Italian, German and Slavic repertory.
